FAQ

Welcome to the Riveted Horizons FAQ. Whether you’re curious about how to follow along, join the caravan for a leg of the journey, or support us from afar, you’ll find answers here.

The Journey

What is the Riveted Horizons Caravan?

Riveted Horizons is a modern recreation of Wally Byam’s legendary Airstream caravans. Starting in July 2026 from Jackson Center, Ohio, we’ll travel around the world in multiple legs spanning seven continents, including a first-ever attempt to bring an Airstream to Antarctica.

When does the caravan begin?

We’ll officially launch on July 5, 2026, after celebrating both the United States’ 250th birthday and Wally Byam’s birthday on July 4 in Jackson Center, Ohio.

How long will the caravan last?

The entire journey will span several years, broken into major legs across North America, Central & South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Joining In

Can anyone join a leg of the caravan?

Yes — anyone with an Airstream travel trailer or Sprinter van is welcome to join a leg of the journey. Each leg will have limited capacity, so spaces will be first-come, first-served. Top-tier Patreon supporters may receive priority signups as an added benefit.

Do I need to pay a deposit to join?

Deposits may or may not be required depending on the leg and logistics involved. We’ll share details ahead of registration for each leg.

What do I need to bring?

Participants must bring their own rig, travel documents (passports, visas), and personal supplies. A detailed checklist will be provided before each leg to help you prepare.

Are pets allowed?

Yes! Pets are welcome on all legs of the caravan. However, all logistics — such as vaccinations, quarantine laws, or paperwork for crossing borders — must be handled by the individual owner. All pet details must be communicated with the caravan leader, Oliver Berning, before departure.

Do I need special experience?

No prior caravanning experience is required. However, participants should be comfortable with extended travel days, outdoor living, and crossing international borders.

Supporting From Afar

How can I support if I can’t travel?

You can join our community on Patreon! Supporters receive Caravan Letters, behind-the-scenes stories, early video access, and even postcards mailed from abroad. Every mile we travel is made possible by our community.

What about one-time donations?

One-time donations to directly support the caravan can be made via Zelle, Venmo, or PayPal. Reach out to oliver@rivetedhorizons.com and he will provide you with the details.

What benefits do Patreon supporters get?

Benefits vary by tier, but may include:

  • Early, ad-free access to YouTube episodes

  • Monthly Caravan Letters (digital or physical)

  • Collectible passport stamps

  • Handwritten postcards mailed from abroad (top tier)

  • Priority signups for caravan participation

Policies & Safety

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation policies will vary by leg and will be shared in advance. In most cases, deposits (if required) will be non-refundable due to planning costs, but this may differ depending on circumstances.

What about safety?

We will travel in convoy style, maintain communication through radios and apps, and carefully plan campsites. Each country has unique considerations, and safety briefings will be provided to participants before departure.

Do I need insurance?

Yes. Participants must have valid travel insurance and vehicle insurance that covers international travel. Specific requirements will depend on each country.
